Preventing Osteoporosis Using Weight Lifting

Osteoporosis is a systematic degradation of bones through bone mass density reduction. Postmenopausal women are twice as likely to suffer from osteoporosis as men. Osteoporosis patients suffer from bone loss in hips, spine and wrists with high risk of bone fracture. Though primary osteoporosis is incurable, it could be controlled with medication, proper diet and weight-lifting.

Weight-bearing exercises include weightlifting, stair climbing, jogging, hiking or other activities, making an individual work out against the gravitational force. Weight lifting encourages muscle to pull on the bone, placing stress on it, which helps to build the bone tissue and eventually strengthen it.

Before starting weightlifting, make it a point to drink plenty of water. Combine several lifting exercises to stay motivated. Doing the same sort of exercises may be boring. An American society study concluded that bone mass density was especially high in individuals that practiced weight lifting, gymnastics and soccer. Weightlifting program is an important exercise program for osteoporosis patients, who wish to reduce the risk of developing low trauma fractures.
