How to Stop Snoring

The best thing about being a snorer is that it generally doesn’t affect your own sleep - in fact you’re probably getting more sleep than anyone else in your household. The problem comes when you have to actually share a bed with someone - keeping your partner awake all night in this instance is not a good thing. The good news is you can do something about this particular sleep problem and, if you’re lucky, it could come down to something as simple as changing your sleeping position.

Nobody snores on purpose - it’s an involuntary act. It’s cause by a sleeper breathing through their mouth and allowing the muscles of the soft palate and uvula to relax. The air passage narrows and as air is breathed in the soft palate and uvula vibrate.

Their are many possible contributing factors which may cause someone to snore including:

  1. Sleeping position
  2. weight problems
  3. Nasal Congestion
  4. Drinking alcohol
  5. Smoking

Obviously some of these things are easier to deal with than others. Your position in the bed can be improved simply by buying a few extra pillows. This way you can prop yourself up in bed to prevent tissues in your throat from falling into the air passages.

Also make sure you go to sleep lying on your side. Of course there is a chance you will move in your sleep but starting on your side will at least give others around you to get to sleep before the tunes begin.

Nasal congestion is another relatively easy problem to tackle. If you suffer from allergy problems make sure making sure you keep your house clean is a start. You can then back this up by taking an antihistamine or decongestant before you go to bed. There are also some excellent natural decongestant remedies you could use too.

The other issues are obviously not so easy to deal with and may require more long term thinking. Weight loss is a whole subject in itself but something you can get advice on from your GP. The same can be said for quitting smoking.

With regards to alcohol it’s just one of those things. Unless you have a drink problem there is not much you can do - if you have a good night out it will make you more prone to snoring. A set of ear plugs for each of you and an anti-snore tool such as the Magnetic Snore Free will help you both get a better nights sleep.
