Types Of Thyroid Disorders And Their Symptoms
The thyroid gland is a small butterfly shaped organ situated at the front of your neck. It produces hormones regulating your body’s metabolism and controlling your energy level. Hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and thyroid nodules are the three main thyroid disorders.
Hypothyroidism occurs due to lack of thyroxin secretion in which the body’s immune system attacks thyroid glands, decreasing hormone production. Symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, dry skin and hair, heavy menstrual periods, constipation and slow thinking. Severe symptoms called myxedema causes profound extreme intolerance to cold and drowsiness followed by lethargy and coma. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the body secretes excessive thyroxin. Symptoms include jitteriness, palpations, feeling hot, weight loss, fatigue, frequent bowel movements, shorter menstrual periods, bulging of eyes and eye irritation. Severe hyperthyroidism symptoms cause “thyrotoxic crisis” leading to rapid pulses, increased fever and delirium.
Thyroid nodules are common and harmless. Usually, a fine needle aspiration biopsy is done to rule out cancer. They are asymptomatic. Hyperthyroidism symptoms may occur. Pain at nodule area running into their jaw and ears may happen. Sometimes, shortness of breath, difficulty in swallowing and hoarseness of voice also occurs. Visit your physician for more details.
