What Are The Various Modes Of Treatment For Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are painful and occur due to disruption in normal balance between salt, minerals, water and other materials found in urine. Kidney stone symptoms include pain, nausea, vomiting, blood in the urine and frequent urination. Diagnosis is done with urine tests and imaging tests. Further testing is done through analysis, medical history, blood work and additional urine testing.

Kidney stone treatment is based on stone size. Small stones easily pass from the body through urination. For large stones, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain medications are recommended. Drink 8-10 glasses of fluid daily. Medications like calcium channel blockers or alpha-blockers help the body to pass the stone. Other treatments include Ureteroscopy in which a thin telescope is inserted through urinary tract to locate the stone and break it. Then, there is extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, which breaks kidney stones through waves.

Another method is called as Percutaneous nephrolithotomy or nephrolithotripsy in which a thin telescope is used and inserted into the kidney, through lacerations in the back area.  The stone is then removed or broken up. Surgical intervention may also be used to remove the stone. Nevertheless, these methods are rarely used.
